A music sync license, also known as a sync license, is a music license granted by the owner or composer of a particular work. The license grants the licensee or purchaser the right to use the music in a visual piece, such as a movie, video game or advertisement.
The rights to the music generally belong to the publishing house which represents the owner. The copyright is divided into two parts:

Audio Recording Master: This is the actual studio recording and is usually owned by a record label.

Composition: they are the musical notes, lyrics and melody written by the composer and songwriter, usually owned by the publisher.

Obtaining the copyright on your music can be understood as “renting” your songs to a third party, granting the right to play the proprietary music in exchange for a fee.

Here are some types of music licenses:

Global License (Blanket License)
Compensation collection companies offer this type of license by granting access to a musical repertoire in exchange for a fixed annual fee. The licensee (customer) can be, for example, a radio station or a shopping center that wants to offer ambient music. From the customer’s point of view, this license saves time, as it will not be necessary to negotiate the rights of each song with the respective composer. The distribution of copyright payments received from customers is generally carried out by the compensation collection companies, through a mixed system of digital monitoring and direct communication of the licensee. This system does not allow to monitor all reproductions and some of them may not be calculated in the compensation distribution system. Other compensation collection companies offer monitoring systems that allow full recording of the plays for each song, giving the right holder certainty that they are getting paid adequately.

Synchronization License

The synchronization license is among the most used in the market.
This license grants the licensee the use of a song to be synchronized, coordinated with a certain digital output. Frequently used for television shows, TV, movies and advertising, the value of the fee to be paid to the customer depends on several variables, including:

• Use of the song: eg. ambient music, advertising jingle

• Media used: national TV, local TV

• Number of listeners: eg. Superbowl, local sporting event

• Importance of the project: independent film, Hollywood film

• Experience and fame of the singer of the song

When the copyrights are collected, publishers and writers generally share the payment at 50%.
